Email in todays news was from 9/14 not 9/4.

 

The problem here isn't American or Delta or United. It's Spirit and other discount airlines who don't factor any bag fees into their base price. You and I and more savvy travelers know what to look for. A lot of people who rarely fly feel like they got stuck with a bait-and-switch when they flew Spirit or a similar airline. (I do enjoy reading the vitriol directed at Spirit via their twitter account, however.)

I understand why there has been a lot of consumer frustration here. However, is it ultimately up to the consumer to know what he/she is purchasing? Yes. Is it the government's role to protect us from our own haste or lack of perspective? Not in my opinion.

(I'd also like to take this opportunity to declare my undying love for Southwest. No baggage fees, no change fees, and I rarely if ever encounter delayed flights. Always my first choice.)

So, tell us how two sources that “saw the email” got the date wrong.

Explain that CNN, or out the sources as liars.

People are nuts about what they want w.r.t. product/service bundles. "Why can't I pay for only the TV channels I want?" "Why do you charge extra fees for bags?"

 

Can he spell looser? Got to think of the next generation of this boatd.

 

If they have the a la carte menu for airlines, I damn sure want it for cable service.

 

Again, I don't really think it's the concept of paying for the bags that bothers people. Spirit (and there may be others but they're the one with which I'm most familiar) knows how to be just transparent enough to avoid allegations of a scam but also back-door some fees on people who weren't expecting them.

IMO the market should correct this somewhat. For instance, I would never fly Spirit and I know many others who won't. What seems like a $50-100 savings when doing your online search hardly ever is, in reality.
