    Truman over Dewey in '48.

That's likely true, if only because the R's won't be able to even find as badly flawed a candidate again. That's ok, he can be a brake in the Senate until 2020. That's a win.

If he grows in the job and helps produce something of value he might even get a look at VP.

I'm waiting for that sort of thought to pop up in a couple of editorials here. Bentley's deal with Strange cost Luther the election, sure as hell. It was too blatant for even Alabama voters to stand for.

A youngish, conservative Republican who ran on a clean up the party and government platform would make a very strong candidate for governor in 2018.

That's the leader in the clubhouse, but polling was so poor back then this feels larger to me. Add in the fact that Trump is so different a candidate.

Didn't we say that after Trump? I'll never be surprised again.

What constitutes a political upset? That the result defied late polling? Or that the result was unanticipated at the outset of (or throughout) the race?

The stakes weren’t as high, but Brat over Cantor was a huge upset.

I'm not sure. It might be No. 1. I'm wary of declarations like that. I don't know enough about American political history.
