Congressman announces cancer diagnosis months after characterizing illness as a personal failing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky State Rep. Dan Johnson, who was under investigation for alleged sexual molestation, has committed suicide, Bullitt County Sheriff Donnie Tinnell said.

Tinnell said Johnson drove on to the bridge over the Salt River on Greenwell Ford Road in Mt. Washington, parked on the north side of it and shot himself in front of his car. His body was found on the bank of the river, just past the bridge.

Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson posted the following message on his Facebook page:

"The accusations from NPR are false GOD and only GOD knows the truth, nothing is the way they make it out to be. AMERICA will not survive this type of judge and jury fake news . Conservatives take a stand. I LOVE GOD and I LOVE MY WIFE, who is the best WIFE in the world,My Love Forever ! My Mom and Dad my FAMILY and all five of my kids and Nine grandchildren two in tummies and many more to come each of you or a total gift from GOD stay strong, REBECCA needs YOU . 9-11-2001 NYC/WTC, PTSD 24/7 16 years is a sickness that will take my life, I cannot handle it any longer. According to court documents obtained by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, the alleged molestation took place on New Year's Eve in 2012. The alleged victim, who was 17 at the time, told authorities that she was staying in a living area of the Heart of Fire City Church where Johnson was pastor, when Johnson, who had been drinking a lot, approached her, kissed her and fondled her under her clothes.

Maybe he runs against Baldwin for Senate, plans to succeed Walker - or "retires" and takes a gig or two from some of the people he helped save billions of dollars. GOP House Speaker is a tough gig because the caucus has stripped the position of a lot of the carrots and sticks used by the Speaker to sway MoCs. It's also a caucus that is tough to lead because nobody wants to follow. I don't know if you go from Speaker to junior Senator, don't even think he could be elected statewide to Senator or Gov. He might just be spreading rumors for leverage. I do think though - that after the tax thing - he doesn't really have any passion for carrying the water on the rest of the agenda.

Ryan has to have some notion that posterity is not going to be generous. He is still young enough to alter the narrative.
Imagine completing one of your life's ambitions and most of the public still thinks you're a pile of garbage.
I wouldn't want to persevere in that 'job' either.

 

The sadly ironic part of this -- the classic Hollywood-studios wouldn't-take-this-script fact -- is that it took place in a place called Bullitt County.

Once the awful tax bill is rammed through, Ryan’s next mission is to gut social security and Medicare. Maybe he knows that’s a losing proposition and he’ll quit with a “win?”

Not sure I believe Paul Ryan is going anywhere. He’s condemned then renewed his support for Trump so many times that he must have whiplash. So maybe.

I read it as he might announce he's not running again and would finish out his term, which might lead the GOP to take away his speakership or maybe let him serve it out.
