    He was lying then.

Just as many sky-is-falling Democrats are lying now. Nothing new here.

The son of humble Pakistani immigrants became a lawyer at one of Chicago’s — and the country’s — top firms?

His parents must be so disappointed.

Could he not get into med school?

I thought this story was interesting. It gives some background to the undressing of the federal judiciary nominee (Peterson) last week by Republican Sen. Kennedy. It makes a convincing case that Kennedy was really gunning for White House counsel Don McGahn. McGahn, for better or worse, has taken a more active role than most past White House counsels in actively choosing, and not just vetting, judicial candidates. His super-hands-on approach has evidently even rankled some Republicans, especially Kennedy, and several of the real duds lately have been McGahn's direct handiwork. Peterson was McGahn's boy from the FEC and thus made the perfect target for Kennedy, who set a great trap.

It also has some interesting inside baseball on the process. Earlier in the thread it was mentioned how Harry Reid got rid of the 60-vote requirement for all judgeships except the Supreme Court. The GOP did away with the latter this year, and also got rid of the tradition of home-state senators of either party essentially having veto power on nominees in their neighborhood. (If I understood it correctly.) That makes for some awfully efficient judge-packing.
