Good for your son that you're getting that help. I've been lucky to be helped financially by a couple Republicans close to me or I'd be in dire straits as the state I live in is a mess when it comes to such resources. Getting bluer by the day. We'll see what happens.

I would like to add that the tax cut would be a beneficial policy for me. Every little bit helps. I don't care if rich people get a tax cut, too. I'm trying to provide for my family.

California has a program where you can be the paid caregiver for relatives who would otherwise be institutionalized. This can include minor children if they rule that the child requires more care than a typical child of the same age would need, and the parent is prevented from pursuing normal employment in order to take care of the child. Mine is considered a "protective care" case, which means that he requires 24/7 supervision in order to not be a danger to himself.

For now, I'm the paid caregiver and the wage is a helluva lot more than I ever made in newspapers. It's nice. But the real upside is that if I ever go back to the workforce or get too old to physically handle him, I can pass that on to other relatives and he won't be a financial burden on them. Once he turns 18, it doesn't have to be a relative anymore, we can hire someone from the outside to take over those hours.

I 100% agree with @RickStain that we, as a nation, have failed the very people who should be getting help without question. It is one of the few things the government should do -- help those who can't help themselves, in particular those who have physical or mental disabilities that demand lifelong care.

Enjoy your little foot-wedge victory tonight, Republicans.

You’ll piss it away next month with a government shutdown.

How do you enforce hate crimes? Intent is hard to prove sometimes, but sometimes it's easy based on evidence. It's an element of the crime.

Of course they are. That sounds the way abortion conversations always go, from both sides. That doesn't mean he's insincere that certain abortions are more offensive than others.

As I asked Q earlier, do they have a law requiring Down fetuses be aborted, or are women choosing on their own to have them?

What evidence is there going to be that the woman is having the abortion because of Down syndrome?

All she would have to say is that she changed her mind on giving birth. Unless she's dumb enough to put out some sort of announcement, there's no way to prove exact intent.

Then why not add to the legislation reiterating the right to abort for non-special needs kids, then?

It's because they see this as a way to chip at the overall law. They don't care about special needs kids, otherwise, as I pointed out earlier, there would be additional funding allocated to deal with the additional special needs kids being born. They didn't. It's called putting their money where their votes are.
