Gosh, next you'll tell me high-ranking Trump officials might work to prevent the Democratic candidate in 2020 from winning!

This was posted by someone back when it was written, in mid-October, but given that the tax cuts have now passed, I think it's worth re-posting.

Why Trump Will Regret Passing Tax Reform

The main thesis is that the long-deferred dream for tax reform is the main glue keeping the GOP establishment from turning on Trump, and that once they get it, they'll feel freer to dump him overboard if he drags them down. It's an interesting read.

The turn-on-Trump dynamic doesn't seem to be playing out so far IMO, but then again the bill only just passed. One thing I do think will happen is that Congressmen and/or admin officials who wanted tax reform above all else will, now that it's in the books, start hanging 'em up rather than deal with Trump and his minions in the "new" GOP. I'd look for Gary Cohn to leave in early 2018, maybe Ryan won't run again as has already been suggested, and other "establishment" types won't run again in 2018. JMO.

FYI the author of this piece, Matt Latimer, is a Republican (of the "establishment" sort) and a former speechwriter in the Bush administration. Fun fact: he also went to Columbia J-School, where he was a classmate of two future SI writers.

Why hasn't Trump signed the bill yet?

He’s waiting until tomorrow so he can try to upstage the Kushner indictment.

I assume it is because the Republicans don't want to be dealing with program cuts during the 2018 mid-terms.

He'll probably wait and sign it after the New Year to delay some of the effects hitting until after the 2018 election, yes.

Oh man, why didn’t he break this out during the campaign?

The private school deduction just mitigates the damage of the state & property tax hit.

Those of us who use the public schools receive no benefit. It's tantamount to state support of religious education.

    So sad.

Now do every federal loan and grant program for higher education.
