I couldn't get home this year so I won't get to see my racist cousin and hear him tell me what's wrong with everyone who doesn't live in white America. I am glad I have an adequate replacement!

I mean, if it's "ethnocentrism," what's the common denominator here? That they're all from hot countries?

I mean, by definition, the common denominator is that they're all from countries whose cultures are different -- and, thus, judged to be inferior -- from that of the speaker in question.

Having a fucked up, bigoted ideology doesn’t seem like a particularly good excuse.

I'm not sure you're interested in having an honest discussion, but let's start here:

According to your semantics, what is the difference between "racism" and "ethnocentrism?" Do they represent distinct notions? If so, what, in your view, is the definition of "ethnocentrism?" And, in your view, what is the definition of "racism?"

For a big fan of law & order, Trump sure does slag FBI officials quite often. Almost like he’s working the refs.

I agree. So why not just call it a fucked up, bigoted ideology? And why get angry when somebody disputes whether that fucked up, bigoted ideology qualifies as racism? Words have meaning. We live in a world where liberals should be going out of their way to protect the meaning of words, given the current administration's attempts to relativize reality.

No, I'm happy to have an honest discussion.

I'll admit that I think the line between "racism" and "ethnocentrism" is pretty fucking fine. I mean, as a matter of word choice, it hinges on a difference between "race" and "ethnicity." So the Rwandan massacre, in which both sides were black, was a matter of ethnocentrism. In this case, you have a white man saying that the black people from certain countries are AIDS infected or live in huts. You could argue that's a difference of ethnicity (European and African) or a difference of race (white and black). Trump's history, his chosen associations, and the fact that all the people he demeaned were black, all combine to make me believe his statement is a racist one.

I would submit to you that, in plainer English, were you to say that all Africans live in huts, most people would argue that's really racist. They're not being demeaned because they're African. It's because they're black.

The way Trump talks about black people who live in America doesn't exactly suggest that he is being ethnocentrist but not racist in his comments about Haitians and Nigerians.
