Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution

IT's implicit in the Constitution that the government subsidize postal service and the creation of a flat cost for the sending a letter from Boston to Anchorage is the same as sending it from Watham to Newton. Its socialism that was built into this country from day 1. And USPS is competing with FedEx and UPS and other private services for package transportation. USPS isn't subisdizing Amazon, or Walmart or Nordstroms or Zappos or Sperry or Levi's or any other retailer anymore than the private ones do. And the private ones do it without the burden of delivering 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th class mail to every hamlet, village and shack in the USA. For so many things Amazon is a middleman facilitating commerce between tens of thousands small business and 1o's of millions of consumers. And many of those small businesses ship, at no cost to the consumer, via UPS and FedEx as as USPS.

Trump is such an ignorant dope about commerce you'd think he never paid for anything in his life, let alone actually run successful corporations and businesses. Trumps US protectionism will cost consumers, all the foreign goods will cost more and US companies, to the extent they can fill the gaps will charge more. They'll charge more to be competitive with foreign companies but not undercut them so as to realize more profits. Those profits will not realize employees increased wages and benefits. We will all pay more for similar goods, but probably worse goods. Employment of Americans won't be changed more than at the margins and incomes will not rise for 97% of us.

Trump is mad because real billionaires like Bezos eat his lunch everyday.

I sell and ship dozens of items each day via digital ads and Amazon; trust me when I say someone is indeed paying for it...the consumer who is paying more for the item being sold and the manufacturer who is paying Amazon (and the USPS) anywhere from $5 to $15 for a shoe-box sized package. I get that you might not realize it (judging from you thinking it's free, and it's nuts) but I'm also not surprised our addled President doesn't understand the basics of America's Internet economy.

Warning: Don't click on the above link. If you're using a Mac, you'll get a bunch of pop-ups and stuff that will prevent you from reading.
I didn't get far enough into it to know what it says. Perhaps someone who didn't have all the issues I had can cut and paste?

The better model would be for USPS to develop and implement safe and secure personal email. They could charge a small fee and you would an email account not dependent on the whims of google or yahoo. An account that would have more protections than private servers who sell your info. Many possibilities to stay with mail delivery digitally.

I suppose I should've put free in quotation marks. I understand that the cost is built in.

My frustration is that the USPS becomes this easy target of the right. It does a wonderful service, it's efficient and it does so with one arm tied behind its back being the only federal agency required to pre-finance its future retirement health and it can't compete with FedEx or UPS because Congress won't let it. I'm willing to make everyone chip in a little more to keep it from the chopping block.
