The Freedom Caucasians are in safe districts -- overwhelmingly white, less educated than other GOP-controlled districts -- and they therefore know that ending the Russia probe will help them fend off the only electoral challenges they will ever face: primary skirmishes from people even more absurd than they are.

No, they're stupid. If Sessions resigned Rosenstein would be AG until a new Trump nominee is confirmed. No such nominee would be confirmed without swearing to letting Mueller's investigation take its course. Trump would have to fire Rosenstein, then find some patsy to be acting AG to follow his orders. That worked out so well for Richard Nixon.
