I don't know if I've ever met a first initial person who wasn't a real scumbag. Seems to be a particular affectation in newspapers.

Relatedly, almost every single lawyer uses their middle initial. Drives me nuts. I guess it's ostensibly to differentiate themselves from lawyers of the same name, but I don't buy it.

Also, relatedly, lawyers are the only people who use the words "relatedly" and "ostensibly."

 

I sign checks using my middle initial. I started it decades ago to differentiate myself from my dad, who had the same first name.
