It seems like a contract they could really regret 3 or 4 years into it, but yeah, you can understand the reasoning for why they would do it.

As a kid I always thought this was a quintessential picture of a middle infielder. RIP

A sport where the most exciting plays are to be avoided is a sport taking risks with its box office appeal. The author didn't mention one thing -- the return to natural grass. In the turf-mad '70s, it was way easier to hit a triple due to the pinball effect.

That doesn't explain the recent precipitous drop in triples and advancing to third. From 1985 through about 2010 the rate is fairly steady. Interestingly steals of third are up since the 1980s, though down the last 20 years.

Living in the same town as Fenway Park means you don't see many triples and going from first to third requires a ball hit to right or center field. So my viewpoint is probably skewed here.

You mean the Yankees don't just get whomever they want?

I can't see the Tweet, but I assume that is about the Astros getting Cole?

The Yankees had their shot at Cole. They didn't want to pay the Pirates' price in terms of talent. So instead, you have one of baseball's smallest markets selling off its best pitcher to another top 5 television market.
