The racist part wasn't referring to the place as a "shithole."

The racist part is explicitly not wanting people from those countries when we could have people from white countries instead.

Trying to spin this as problematic because of calling a place a shithole is another nice piece of talking points racists are using to deflect attention from their racist support of a racist.

I'll go back to 1977 - not by president in the White House - but by party in control of Congress.

    1977-1981 - Democrats: -0.32% (annual average)
    1981-1987 - Split: +12.85%
    1987-1995 - Democrats: +9.64%
    1995-2007- Republicans: +11.46%
    2007-2011 - Democrats: +2.41%
    2011-2015 - Split: +11.70%
    2015-2017 - Republicans: +12.08%

Democrats can feel free to take credit of the strong gains during the "greed of the 1980's". Just refrain from taking all of the credit from 2011 to 2017.

Improving on all this is a pretty tall order.

Don't Democrat constituencies largely cluster in large cities, college towns, and state capitols?

When you look at those maps of counties carried in presidential elections, by each party, it's pretty clear that the country is divided between urban and rural.

Now, obviously, there are a lot of people in these cities vs. more rural counties, but if some areas go 90% for the democrat candidate, while others go 55% for the republican, wouldn't we get similar representation in congress as we do now, unless we specifically drew lines to mitigate this?

Is a merit based immigration system inherently racist?

Congress and the President could make temporary status permanent by the end of the business day without minimal effort. They won't. Why not?

Because they believe the country is better off without these people than with them. Why?

Because they hate brown people. There is no other argument to be made. Again, nobody ever hides behind "rules are rules" when they have the power to make the rules, unless they like the outcome of the rules.

The conservatives on this board and in the country at large continue to come up with ad-hoc reasons why they like each individual piece of immigration "reform." This one is about enforcing the law, this one is about discouraging future illegal immigration, this one is just because temporary status is expiring and there's nothing they can do (a lie, but they don't care about lying), this one is about national security.

At the end of the day, there is only one common thread: They get to share a country with fewer brown people, and they like it that way.
