OK ... so yeah they're kicking a field goal if he goes out of bounds.

 

So perhaps' Williams' thinking was, take out his legs and make sure he crash-lands inbounds. Clock runs out, no field goal.

 

"If he goes out of bounds" being the key. With Williams and Crawley right there, he might not ... and he might have to really struggle, thus running clock.

 

Nah. Players tackle like that all the time. Leading with helmet, head down, diving at the offensive players. Not looking, not wrapping up. I swear, it's because they're such good athletes, they've gotten away with it forever. But it's just poor tackling in the NFL. It rarely goes well, and this time it was disastrous. Gotta keep your head up and use your eyes.

 

The Vikings weren't really hoping to score on that play. It was designed to set up something else. What's the best analogy in other sports? A shot out of the rough in golf that goes in on the fly?

 

A basketball player trying to draw a foul to get to the line in the closing seconds and the shot goes in?
