Nate Silver points out that the prior shutdowns of the Clinton and Obama administrations had next door to no impact on subsequent elections. After shutdowns ended, public opinion returned pretty much to where it had been before.

 

This is not surprising. Dumb as the American people are, they’re pretty quick to recognize “games the political class plays” ...

It's the timing. The shutdown could last for 3 months and it would still be half a year old come Election Day.

The only way it has an effect is if it somehow coincides with or helps trigger a recession.
