Penn State scorn versus Michigan State scorn

This is an institutional failure of criminal dimensions and the institutions must be punished. Michigan State should lose all athletics for five years. USOC and USA gymnastics should lose tax-exempt status and then be sued into oblivion (which will likely happen anyway). The other Mich St. scholarship athletes should be given a free right of transfer, and those who like the school for some reason will be mandated to keep their scholarships even if there's no sports. Tom Izzo can go on TV if he needs money, which he doesn't.

Seems rare for a judge to read selected excerpts of a letter and then say, well, I'm not releasing all of it out of concern for victims.

Well, you could, and maybe someday, someone will try. Charlie Pierce wants to "burn it all down." He called for Michigan State to be decertified by the NCAA for five years and for American gymnastics to no longer be a sport. End the sport for good, kick MSU out of the NCAA.

Every media person out there was all-in on the Missouri protests until someone tried to strongarm a kid journalist.

Eh, I vote for Olympics ban in 2018 and 2020. Russia and USA can revive and stage their own winter Goodwill Games this year. :)

I am cheering for prison rape. Maybe it give him a tiny bit of empathy and understanding for the pain inflicted on his victims.

He forfeited his humanity by victimizing at least 200 vulnerable children.

Fuck him. Cut off his balls and feed them to him.

My friend's daughter was very good at field hockey.

She came out of a tiny Pennsylvania high school and, working 12 months a year, hitting five National Festivals in a row, drew the attention of colleges. By the way, she was a 3.5 student, too.

She was courted by Duke, Penn State, Northwestern, Michigan State, to name just a few. She and her family visited East Lansing and fell in love with the town and yes, the school.

This young woman has played two seasons in the Big Ten now, has maintained that 3.5 GPA in college. And now you want to tell her that she has to leave the school she grew to love if she wants to continue playing college field hockey. Again, her main passion since she was 11 and a means toward an end -- a major-college diploma she might not otherwise have had the opportunity to receive.

She's going to leave behind the teammates who have become a family to her because of something the gymnastics team's doctor did and the administration's failure to react.

I don't know, that does not feel fair to the young woman. But hey, I guess you have to deliver the message and swallow the collateral damage. Then again, you might not have to look the collateral damage in the eye.

    Agree with shotglass.

They should clear house, by legislative action if needed, of the university president/provost/chancellor/athletic director and every single one of the trustees. That's who did this.

Thank you, LTL. And I'm all for them cleaning out the administrative house.

I like a lot of Charlie's work, but that's a hot take worthy of First Take.

But fortunately Simon's finally exiting. It's a (small) start:

Sources: MSU President Lou Anna Simon plans to step down Thursday amidst fallout from Larry Nassar case

You know, I'd like to hear from the young woman herself. She might have more sympathy for the abused young women than for the school that let it happen.

I feel secure in telling you that she wishes to continue playing field hockey and attending classes at Michigan State University.

She can still play field hockey. She can attend Michigan State. But she can't do both. This was a criminal conspiracy of neglect. She could sue Michigan State too if she wants. USA Gymnastics might as well go out of business now. Same for the USOC. They MANDATED those children submit to a molester. Their top officials ought to be in cells, bur bankruptcy and public humiliation will do. Shotty, I like you, but your stance on these issues is morally insupportable. When institutions allow heinous acts to take place through institutional cowardice, they must be punished. As this is the greatest child molestation scandal in American sports history, the punishment must be commensurately severe.
