Drinking pretty steadily for 30-plus years kind of extinguishes the novelty. Besides, I'm not teetotaling, and there will be a 12- or 15-year-old Oban in my future. Just taking a much-needed break.

    My liver rejoices.

I haven't had a drink in 7 1/2 years. As someone who went through rehab years ago was told, "Everyone gets a certain amount to drink in life. You hit your limit at 30."

I can't imagine any reason I would drink again.

I cut waaaaaaaay back when I started this latest round of torture diet in July. I’m not so sure it’s the calories so much as the inhibition ... if I’ve gotten on the grog my inclination to eat sensibly is nil.

One thing about being overweight and losing it is that you never, ever forget that you were once overweight. People are always pushing sweets on me at work or at family gatherings, and if I turn it down, I get the whole, "Oh, I'm sure you can handle it. You need some meat on those bones!" speech. I always feel like I'm one more Dorito away from waking up 50 pounds heavier. You never forget about it.
