Give me a break. I'm a slim, trim 217 pounds, thanks to the Playboy Buddy Rose Blow-A-Way diet.

There is a fine line to some of this stuff, especially when working in a small town.

I would not enter a contest or accept a gift while covering a game, but don't see an issue with the donation since it was to a specific cause, not to the school at large.

Back to the OP, if he bought something from the snack bar, odds are some money went to a booster club or school group.

The pay to cover an event argument is a bad one. We're getting access, not favors. Now, if someone uses their press pass to just go and watch a game, that's not right.

I think the key here is you're buying the candy bar. These seems like a silly slippery slope you're trying to set up.

I said the critique is at least a defensible position. I think you took it the opposite way, because that's what you wanted to take away from what I said.

It's really easy to avoid these issues. Don't participate in chuck-a-puck or any other contest while you're working and certainly don't accept any reward for participating in the contest (the pushback on this is baffling to me), and don't participate in school fundraisers. The fact that you had a personal and emotional connection to the fundraiser is even more reason not to participate. You have any number of ways to contribute to that cause without doing it while you are working as a reporter covering an event.

I think that's the key to all of this. A lot of these issues are so easy to avoid, so just avoid them.

Am I the asshole to present a reasoned opinion without resorting to name calling? Or is it just because the other guy is more emotional?

Being able to put aside your emotions to take a reasonable look at things is a quality, not a fault.

The last time I said that sentence, I was sleeping on the couch for a weekend.

Bought a Milky Way at a game Tuesday night. Felt guilty. But it was the first candy bar I've had in a couple months and it was DELICIOUS!
