I imagine they might mean that they'll still pay them if the new guy wants new assistant coaches in place, and they can't find new jobs. Assistant coach salaries are probably a drop in the bucket as compared to the overall revenue of a NFL team.

I'm as cynical as anybody, but isn't it possible that in the end he really didn't want to yank his family from New England, where they are comfortable and stable, to Indianapolis? I know that goes against what we are used to from coaches, but reportedly it factored heavily.

I heard he was going to move them to Gary. Yuck.

Well, that would be quite a commute then.

He could have moved them to Tahoe. Only 15 minutes away.

That is something he could have figured out before saying yes and having the Colts hire some of his choices for assistant coaches.

Here's at least one perspective putting the blame for this mess exactly where it belongs -- entirely on McDaniels.

After burning Colts, Josh McDaniels can wave bye-bye to any head-coaching job outside New England

Josh McDaniels was a disaster in Denver, and yet here he was about to his get second HC position at the age of 41. The dude is a flake and a backstabber and I can’t wait till he is coach of the Patriots

According to Peter King, for whatever that's worth, any reticence about moving his family wasn't part of the decision (Peter King: Inside why Josh McDaniels jilted Colts). Assuming King's source was McDaniel or someone close to him, you would guess they'd put that reason out there if they could, since it's one of the few things that can make McDaniel look a little bit better.

Theoretically, yes. But sometimes things sound great in theory and not so great when you have to take the plunge.

You are Josh McDaniels. In the middle of the night, your wife wakes up and says, "I can't do it. I can't go." What do you do?

Billy Beane got the hero's treatment in "Moneyball" for changing his mind when push came to shove.

You man up and tell the world your wife owns your balls. JK. But if it's a family decision, I would come right out and say that. Allowing time for others to craft the narrative is damaging.

    Are you married?

I was kidding. I was married for more than a decade, so yes, I know how those conversations go.
