Beane's was a very different situation. He stayed close to a daughter who lived with her mother and couldn't/wouldn't move.

It looks like the oldest McDaniels kid is 13. They'd be fine.

If he did make the call with that in mind, more power to him, but it doesn't match up with the coaching profession in general and it doesn't sound like that would have been the reason.

His wife had 10 days to say no. I've been married for 18 years and she and I certainly don't agree on everything, but 10 days is enough to make a decision. It was real the moment they got the offer, not the moment he said yes.

Also, I agree with mateen. If he's backing out at the last minute due to his family, perhaps a scenario such as the one you suggest, why not say so?

This is on McDaniels. He screwed this up and I think it would be a mistake for any team to give him another shot.

The big difference is that Beane screwed Boston and McDaniels is screwing another team for Boston.

Ya know who seems to be skating in this whole thing are Kraft and Belichick, who reportedly hotboxed McDaniels at the 11th hour to convince him to stay. That's slimy. If I'm the rest of the league -- the owners and GMs -- I'm definitely adding that to the list of 1 million things that are shady about the New England Patriots.

If Belichick told him, "I'm leaving very soon," that would be relevant information for McDaniels that I would not regard as sleazy to disclose. Also, if he told McDaniels that and not Kraft, that would be amusing. Aren't Patriots conspiracy theories fun?

I think it's probably some combination of all or at least certain of these things. Cold feet at the altar, essentially.

I made it clear here that I think Kraft showed a lack of integrity in his handling of the Brady suspension and I believe Belichik has built his success in part on figuring out the best ways to bend and/or break the rules, but it is silly to blame them for what McDaniels did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Patriots doing everything they can to keep McDaniels.

I've always figured if you get an offer from someplace else - you take it. Even if you end up improving your situation at the current spot, your bosses probably suck and will resent you.
Hearing Belichick grovel though...."Uh, Josh...., just wanted to say, um, I think you're a really good coach, and ....I'd like it if you stayed, ok? And, uh - you got those 22 cutups done yet?"

"And, uh, Matt ... just wanted to say ... good luck in Detroit."

Um, it's sleazy if he told him on Sunday, yes. Again, just produce a viable excuse. Peter King said McDaniels was not promised the NE job when/if Belichick is gone.

The whole season makes no sense personnel-wise, from trading Garappolo to benching Butler to rubbing a hand up McDaniel's inner thigh just as he was about to marry someone else.
