Do you read writing about the Olympics?

I'll read a quirky piece or two in the NYT, but I don't wake up in the morning seeking the latest coverage. And I'm not sure I'll watch any live coverage the next two weeks, I don't get a lot of TV time and when I do I want to go straight to the Netflix queue or something I know I want to watch. The days of locking on NBC and suffering through all the breaks and Heartwarming Personal Stories to get to the one night's marquee 20 minutes of actual sports are over for me.

That's one area where I think things have greatly improved, is NBC's use of of its cable channels to provide wall to wall coverage. The prime time show is as you described, but you can flip over to another channel almost any time of day and find something interesting without that stuff. If you're at home working or something during the day, it's wonderful background noise and just a straightforward sports broadcast.

  4. I read Christine Brennan's columns.

    Other than that? Nope.

I enjoy reading about the people who compete in the Olympics. I have very little interest in the Olympics as an event (medal count, political conflicts, the opening/closing ceremonies, etc.)

I avoid Christine Brennan's columns, and will go so far as to turn the radio off when she makes an NPR-affiliate appearance. She says the same things -- corrupt judging! bias against women! -- so I don't feel like I need to read anymore.

I've been enjoying the live streams, even while NBC is broadcasting at the same time. The commentators seem more measured, sometimes nuanced. It's like they listened to spnited, "We are not the story. We are the storytellers."

I stay away from the actual coverage outside of the events themselves. Too treacly.

Brennan is the only sportswriter I know of that blocks me on Twitter. I never even directly engaged with her; I simply described her overwrought pile on how the world was ending because A-Rod was broadcasting akin to the work of a middle-schooler. I stand by that.

I do not read the Olympic equivalent of "gamers" no matter who writes them or what publication they are in.

I do read columns or summary pieces on the Olympics and/or Olympic events written by people who I enjoy reading.

Not very profound - - but that is the way it is...

This. In the summer, since the examples are easier, love to watch the entree items like swimming, track and field and basketball, but love to catch some boxing and water polo as well, which is where the cable channels come in. When the hometown paper isn't staffing a games, I do like to read the roundups.

One thing a wise editor mentioned to me, and I've told others when I've been in the hot seat, is always run the medals table.

I get ESPN the magazine because I'm an ESPN "Insider" subscriber. This month the cover featured Chloe Kim. She's kinda cute, so I read about her. Then, after Red Gerard won the first gold medal for the U.S., and I heard his family liked to get drunk and party watching him, I read about him. I've never given a shit about snowboarding or snowboarders until this year, but I enjoyed reading about them.

As far as the rest of the shit, I haven't read a word. I'm thinking I might get around to reading about curling just because it's the dumbest event ever but so totally cool, too.
