I do think from a marketing standpoint it’screallybinteresting. Seems like so-called “black movies” were confined to ‘70s genre films or, recently, Tyler Perry-like comedies. Obviously black families will come out for a superhero blockbuster, too, which always seemed like the province of proud white geeks.

I went to a comic-con type event for a regional TV station a few years back, and I'd say about a third of the diehards in the crowd were black.

Jordan is outstanding, which is one reason I'm looking forward to seeing this. I thought he was great in Creed and he was one of the few elements of Fantastic Four that didn't suck. He's also going to play Guy Montag in the upcoming Fahrenheit 451 movie on HBO.

I've got tickets to go with my daughter Tuesday. She's become a big MCU fan over the last couple of years.I like what we saw of the character in Civil War. I also thought Andy Serkis was good as Ulysses Klaue in Age of Ultron, so hopefully he and Jordan can provide interesting villains.

Good point. And I guess this is the first big-budget black superhero flick since the genre trended in that direction. Blade (which never gets the credit it deserves for resurrecting the superhero genre) felt more like a low budget indie film and even that was 20 years ago.
Come to think of it, has there ever been an "all-access" movie like this with a black leading man and mostly black cast? As you noted, even the "black movies" with some crossover appeal tend to be marketed heavily toward black audiences. Whatever white audience they pick up is just gravy. There have been big-budget movies with Denzel, Jamie Foxx and Will Smith in the leads, but most of those weren't what you would call all ages. They were largely dramas marketed to adults, or had a black lead and largely white casts (like Independence Day and Men in Black) if they were action movies.

Jordan might be the best physically imposing actor ever. Better actors, bigger actors, sure. Never would have seen it coming from his FNL days.

He was so good at a young age in The Wire. I might not have guessed he'd be playing Apollo Creed's son and super heroes, but he was a damn fine actor even as a kid.

I'm an absolute sucker for '70s cop movies. Dirty Harry, Serpico, French Connection, anything Lumet, throw in a jazzy score and I'm in. Hadn't seen Fuzz before with Burt Reynolds and Raquel Welch and the cast is loaded with great character actors - one guy I recognized, turned out he played Davy Jones manager in the Brady Bunch episode. Even better it's based on an Ed McBain novel from his 87th precinct books.

Yup, and I definitely agree that he was the only part of Fantastic Four that didn't suck at all.

  10. Taking my youngest to see Black Panther this morning - we have the day off.
    Will report back.
Honestly, I'm more excited to see Thor Ragnaroc, than BP, but he wants to see it and he loves to go to the movies.

Watch Marvel finally make a Fantastic Four movie that doesn't suck, but the one weakness will be a bad casting choice for the Human Torch. It will be a nice contrast to the Fox movies, which mostly got Johnny Storm right and so much else wrong. Helps that they had Chris Evans before they had Jordan in the role.

I'd say it's interesting that both ended up with roles in the MCU, but that cast has gotten so big with so many movies that it's barely interesting to play six degrees of separation with those movies any more.

  12. Two BIG thumbs up on Black Panther!!
Jordan was awesome! Made the movie.
Andy Serkis has a great role as well.

Probably the worst thing about the whole thing was the inclusion of Martin Freeman (token white guy?) ... Why was he in this?
I liked the story. I guess maybe it is political, but not for a statement. The story was a fit the politics.
I can see why black people are loving this movie. It is a black superhero movie. But it isn't.
It's a superhero movie. It's set in Africa. Honestly, more white people would be out of place in this movie. It's a big deal, because skin color isn't a big deal.

I really enjoyed it. I'd put it up there with the 1st Avengers movie.
