You wondered how a superhero movie could be believable?

Suspension of disbelief is pretty important at the movies. I get what qt is saying.

The universe created by any movie has to be believable on its own terms, whether you're talking about 'Wild Strawberries" or "The Incredibles."

Walk Hard. I can't believe I had never seen it before. Stupid but hilarious.

Ricky (played by the creepy kids show producer) and his mother were great.

The general genre parodies are always the best, where they make fun of the tropes rather than specific things (like The Naked Gun and Spaceballs), and that one nailed the tone of the music biopic genre perfectly. The intentional over the top acting just made it better, IMO.

Exactly. It's fine to make up rules for the world you create in these movies, but you have to stick to those rules. The story has to make sense in the reality the storytellers have created. That becomes more and more complex as the world becomes larger. With all the movies and television shows, the MCU has become quite large.

Thank you. I feel like I have a discussion along these lines with people at least a couple times a year.

My big pet peeve is "shape shifters," which is the biggest cheat in storytelling.

    Hypothetical, but typical conversation:

"I like 'My Little Pony' well enough, but the shape-shifting changelings are kind of a cheat."

"It's a world with talking and flying ponies, you dolt!"

"Well, sure, but even in Equestria, there need to be some kind of rules of physics, or else there's no dramatic tension at all. Literally anything can happen."

After that I usually pour her some cereal or give her a bath.

    You sound fun!

  11. I have tried twice to watch Walk Hard. I can't make it past the first 15 minutes.

Just wait. They're coming to the MCU, possibly in Avengers 4.

They can definitely be a cheat, but I've seen they are a big part of science fiction. An alien race of shape shifters were a major part of Deep Space 9, which was one of the better sci-fi television shows I've watched. They've been a part of Marvel Comics for decades with the mutant Mystique and the alien Skrulls. One of the rumors about Avengers 4 is the Skrulls emerging as a threat.
