Rod Carew, until his daughter got sick. Then he changed to become more likable.

Lombardi was kinda a love-hate thing. Some of his players hated him while they were playing for him, but loved the lessons he taught them.

I didn't know much about Earnhardt when he was killed so looking at it with no preconceived notion, it was fascinating to hear the comments about him that people made before and after he was killed.

A buddy of mine was hosting a radio show and interviewing a prominent major leaguer. My buddy mentioned how crushing it was when he interviewed a childhood hero who was a complete asshole -- the guy had actually wandered around the radio studio looking for things of value and demanded they give them to him. He wouldn't say who it was.

They got to the commercial break and the ballplayer said "Willie Mays, right?"

    He was right.

I've seen Dan Marino fans post comments that he can be a jerk around Dan Marino fans.

I didn't know that about Payne Stewart. I had only 2-3 interactions with him, he was fine in those instances but that is hardly a good sample size. He did an exhibition in Richmond once, I didn't recognize him when he walked in wearing jeans (and no hat). Talked to him in the locker room while he got dressed for the round. He opens his briefcase and pulls out a ring that had about 50 watchbands on it. He picked out the one that matched his shirt and pants combo and went out to play golf.

Also a very small sample size from golf: Tom Kite had a rep, I'm pretty sure, as being one of the nicer guys in the game. I talked to him twice and he was anything but. Again, small sample size. I think someone said something similar about him here a while back.
