That's cool that he responded. I also mentioned that his Coast to Coast Show shaped what I wanted to do for a career and he couldn't have reacted with any more indifference.

He did seem distracted between our "three questions in two minutes" interview. There was some phone call he was on that made him seem stressed so perhaps that was part of it. Wouldn't even take his shades off for the interview.

Saw Brett at the World Series parade three years ago on an absolute random note. Ass. The players and coaches we met that day were absolutely wonderful, however.

I interviewed Costas when the Players Championship was still the TPC. It was right when Later premiered and he asked me what I thought of the show. I mentioned one he did with Steven Wright and he said: "Yeah, I thought he would be different offstage but he's exactly the same guy and it didn't work." He was great with me.

I know it's strange. I've only heard good things about him from others. Again, maybe it's me. All I know is both interactions were miserable. The first was a one-on-one interaction and the other was with a TV cameraman and another reporter.

That's because he was the king of turning on the big smile when the TV cameras were on. As soon as the lights on them faded it was fuck everybody.

A bunch of asshole sportswriters built up the idea Williams was a jerk during his playing days. He was lifelong friends with Pesky, Doerr, and DiMaggio. He was a life long supporter of the Jimmy Fund and the kids after the Braves left town. On the other hand, he was very brash coming up and wasn't very close to his kids. He was an amazingly talented person with an attitude to match and a messed up family life to top things off.

Hasn't Starr had health issues? Maybe this was before then - but dealing with serious health crap can beat the nice out of anybody

He's had a number of strokes and cannot speak at all, from what I understand.

Brett is known for handing out $200 tips around Prarie Dunes golf club, but I get the impression he is moody and you don't want to catch him on a day when he'd prefer to not be famous.

I’ve heard - and it breaks my heart as a Tiger fan - that Al Kaline is kind of a dick in person. I met him when I was 11 and he seemed nice enough (we got to visit the clubhouse before a game - my dad knew someone- and he was relatively friendly and signed autographs before heading up to join George Kell in the booth). But I’ve heard plenty of stories since then about him being prickly and downright rude to fans, especially kids.

I was standing by the Tigers dugout one time and a bunch of kids were yelling for Al to sign autographs. Kaline takes a peek out of the dugout and says, "God, do I have to go out there again?"
I thought: "Yes you do. You're Al Kaline."
