How does it work? Well, Trump starts saying "No collusion! No evidence of collusion!" over and over. Fox News picks up the mantra, and so do all the various mouthpieces and apologists. Who said that Mueller was looking for "collusion"? It certainly wasn't Mueller. He's looking for Russian interference in the 2016 election, and for any links or coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, as well as any other crimes committed by the individuals under investigation that come to his attention during the course of his investigation. Things like, oh, money laundering and bank fraud, for a starter.

Trump's associates, who make the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight look like the Corleone Family, have given Mueller any number of things to investigate, plots on tape, intelligence intercepts from a number of foreign countries, perjured themselves, etc. He's in a target rich environment, and considering that he's prosecuted actual crime families, the Trump family are fighting way above their weight class. It's only a matter of time.

Love it. Not much triggers the rich quite like protectionism.

Trump's truly from the 80s, man.

And then Mueller releases a definitive, scathing report outlining Trump's personal crimes to Congress. Paul Ryan says he's very concerned, Nunes and Rohrenbacher say whatever Putin pays them to say, Trump says it's all partisan politics, and the House refuses to impeach. Trump can pardon everything short of that (unless somehow Mueller wants to work with a state to convict at the state level) and it's all pointless.

He's going to start a trade war in defiance of all his advisors, and he has no clue what that means. He's a real estate guy, no connection to manufacturing. That shows in his rhetoric about bringing back the steel and aluminum industries. The reason those are now imported is a combination of other countries building expensive cutting edge factories and cheap labor. In large part it is the same dynamic as any number of other businesses U.S.businesses which were offshored because they were more profitable that way.

I doubt that Mueller attempts to charge Trump. I suspect that he'll be an unindicted co-conspirator. Unless information that Mueller discovers can be used to charge him after he is out of office or by someone like NY Atty. Gen. Schneiderman to bring state charges, Trump probably won't be convicted.

The question is can the charges be piled high enough and are odious enough that the Republican party will be forced to stop the See No Evil, Hear No Evil act. The voters may exert enough pressure to force them to move on that.

Exactly. He wants to take the action to appease the base without thinking through the consequences. Not the first time he's celebrated opposite day in the last 13 months.
