Among commonly eaten foods, tomatoes generate more disdain than just about anything. I think tomatoes are delicious, but some people -- as evidenced here -- don't simply dislike tomatoes; they want them purged from the earth. I hate certain insects like that, but I can't think of a single any food that I actively hate.

I've just learned that some people really hate cucumber. I don't think it tastes like much of anything. I don't love it, but I find it too innocuous to hate.

Tomatoes, however, are second only to onions in my list of the Devil's Apples.

I don't mind tomatoes, the taste. I mind a big wet slab on my sandwich or burger. Same with onions. Taste of onions is fine. A bunch of raw onion on a sandwich? Prison is too good for you, sandwich artist.

That's how I feel about asparagus. People hate asparagus. I hate vegetables, and I like asparagus. It seems completely inoffensive to me.

Coriander (which has another name... cilantro, maybe?) is like that. I can't really taste it, but I know people who taste it like ashes. Like someone has put a cigarette out in their food. It ruins everything it touches.

The human palette is pretty interesting. I know I don't have a good one. I can't taste or smell very well, I don't think. But I know people who can detect, like, a microgram of saffron in a gallon of chile. I'm not sure which is the better way to live.

The Kinks' 'Waterloo Sunset' is the greatest pop song ever recorded.

It’s cilantro, and I know some people who say it makes everything taste like shampoo. Which is a shame, because few things in life are as delicious as real cilantro.
