Madlock just didn't end up playing enough games to accumulate enough career value to be a HOFer. He played in about 1,800 games. Wade Boggs played 2,400 games. George Brett was over 2,700.

Notably Gene Tenace, in about 150 less games than Madlock, accumulated 8 more WAR (46 to 38).

    Madlock was a dink-and-dunk hitter at a power-hitting position.

Why isn't he in the HOF?

It's very technical and you have to be an card-carrying BBWAA expert to understand: You see, he doesn't feel like a Hall of Famer.

    Bill Madlock: Hall of Famer?

There’s a case begging for a Dick thread

I was a Madlock fan, and even I have to admit this thread jack is too much.

The Dodgers waived their no-facial hair policy when they acquired Madlock. They said it was because he had a skin condition that was irritated by shaving. Truth is, they waived the policy because he could hit.

My father was a huge fan of the 70s and 80s Pirates, and therefore loved Madlock.

Also, he had - and still has to this day - a completely awkward admiration for Tony Fernandez. When Madlock rolled Fernandez that night (we were in attendance), he was on the verge of implosion. He had no idea how to reconcile what had just happened.

Also I remember Madlock’s answer to a reporter who asked him if he was going to reach out to Fernandez to apologize.

“What am I, the Welcome Wagon?”

I suspect the quote was cleaned up a tad.

Who is the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter and hit two home runs in the same game?
