I did that once for the Genesis Invisible Touch tour. Stayed out all night, met up with a friend who lifted a bottle of peppermint schnapps from a nearby grocery store and had a better time waiting for tickets than the actual show. Felt like a jerk when they ended up adding three more shows to the run.

How about 18-year-old girls who call you “Dad?”

    She’s 17, but close enough.

The absolute best. I'd always volunteer to do it b/c I already held sportswriter hours in high school and junior college. Stay up all night at my parents' house, trek out about 3 AM stake a spot, listen to my Walkman, get the tix at 10, go home, crash about 3. Kids have no idea what they're missing.

I sometimes look back at my pop-culture tastes from back then with horror, but even then, when I saw it in the theater, I knew that Over the Top was terrible.

Multiple Over The Top references in a single message board thread in 2018, what a time to be in dystopia.

    Over the Top (1987)

    • Cast

    • Soundtrack
    • A soundtrack album was released in 1987 to coincide with the release of the movie. It contains music from Frank Stallone, Kenny Loggins (who performs the film's central theme, "Meet Me Half Way"), Eddie Money, and Sammy Hagar. John Wetton, lead singer of the rock group Asia, sang "Winner Takes It All" for the movie, but after performing the song, it was felt that his voice wasn't "mean" enough, so the song was offered to Hagar, whose version, featuring a bass guitar solo from Hagar's then-bandmate Edward Van Halen, ended up being the one on the soundtrack. Asia is credited for the track "Gypsy Soul", but Wetton is the only Asia member who actually contributed to the song.

      The track listing is:
      1. "Winner Takes It All" – Sammy Hagar
      2. "In This Country" – Robin Zander (International versions of the film had Eddie Money singing instead)
      3. "Take It Higher" – Larry Greene
      4. "All I Need Is You" – Big Trouble
      5. "Bad Nite" – Frank Stallone
      6. "Meet Me Half Way" – Kenny Loggins
      7. "Gypsy Soul" – Asia
      8. "The Fight (Instrumental)" – Giorgio Moroder
      9. "Mind Over Matter" – Larry Greene
      10. "I Will Be Strong" – Eddie Money

I saw this once in the theaters and that was more than enough. Just awful.

Yes - it was terrible by all measures - but living in this sad and sick world and looking back it is adorable that someone once unironically made a movie about professional arm wrestling.

When you see the names Sly comes up with for characters, you can see how he churns out a movie script in a weekend.

Thank god for Cannon Entertainment. Nothing was too low budget or too much of a bad idea. They did some great stuff with limited budgets, but once they got big budgets, they couldn’t keep up and lost their shirts on stuff like Over the Top, Superman 4, Masters of the universe and Captain America.
