Oh, I can imagine it. I hope SI can, too. Deitsch added little other than a liberal echo chamber.

What would have been interesting is if The Athletic had went way off the board in that hire. Someone with no contacts. No asses they like to kiss. No political perspective. But, well, can't do that, I guess.

Amen. White men who tell other white men to hire women and people of color don't rate much for me. Just work behind the scenes to get those people hired, or give up your position to a person of color or a woman.

You have to cover media in sports - not so much the personalities, but the media rights deals - which are pretty much everything at the pro and college levels. SI is starting to feel like the local sports section. A few familiar names still drop by periodically, but how many of their top people have side gigs as professors? or TV work?

I’m sorry you weren’t offered the job.

No contacts? I'd think the key to success in that job is your ability to cultivate sources. I personally think you are being unfair, and Deitsch did a pretty good job of that. Empirically, you don't stick around on a specialized beat like that for a national publication for more than 2 decades if you aren't doing something right.

I didn't see it mentioned on here, but The Athletic recently secured another $20 million in VC funding. It looks like they aren't being shy about putting the money to work quickly.

I'd be very interested to see an example of this.

Me too! Sounds like it pays well!

Seriously, Deitsch has become one of the official cry corners for ESPN. The Athletic will gave good access to all the goings on at ESPN, that’s for sure

If you played a drinking game that involved taking a drink every time Deitsch says "in terms of," you'd be dead before the first ad read.

That said, I enjoy his podcasts. But damn, that's a crutch for him.

The idea that this site is going young is erroneous as hell.
Jayson Stark, age 66, is one of its most recent hires.

Opening Day is next week. Will the Athletic have more baseball beat writers in place by then?

That took me aback. Stark's age. I would've never guessed 66.
