And it's fantasy to think we could have taken on the Soviet army in 1945.

 

It was a Hail Mary just before halftime. Low risk, possible reward.

Stalin knew two things:
1) Germany WILL attack us.
2) We are in no shape industrially to face them now. Must buy as much time as possible.

He thought he had until at least 1942, that Germany would not dare attempt a two-front war. He was wrong.

To this public pact of nonaggression was appended a secret protocol, also reached on August 23, 1939, which divided the whole of eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence. Poland east of the line formed by the Narew, Vistula, and San rivers would fall under the Soviet sphere of influence. The protocol also assigned Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland to the Soviet sphere of influence and, further, broached the subject of the separation of Bessarabia from Romania. A secret supplementary protocol (signed September 28, 1939) clarified the Lithuanian borders.

 

Good thing Joe Stalin was another man of peace!

 

Gee, maybe Britain and France should have accepted Stalin's offer to send a million troops in to stop Germany two weeks before the war even started. And of course Poland was against it. How did that work out for them?

By gosh, I think United States-Germany-Japan could have been a No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Professor Donald Cameron Watt, author of How War Came - widely seen as the definitive account of the last 12 months before war began - said the details were new, but said he was sceptical about the claim that they were spelled out during the meetings.

"There was no mention of this in any of the three contemporaneous diaries, two British and one French - including that of Drax," he said. "I don't myself believe the Russians were serious."

 

It's after 9:30. Hasn't Trump done anything stupid yet today? This really is not intended to be the President Stalin thread (although Uncle Joe would never cheat at golf).

 

Not yet, but this post from last night raises a question: Does anyone think Trump ever prays? It's garbage talk.

 

Maybe he means 'affected' in the sense of 'artificial' or 'phony.'

In which case, scoreboard.

 

What is it with Trump going out of his way to praise first responders every time there's a shooting or an accident where lives are lost? I mean, ultimately, they're just doing their jobs.

I'd like to think it's more than just pandering to voters, and maybe it is ... or maybe it's just a grown-up boy who's still fascinated with fire trucks and fancy uniforms.

But it's not just Trump. Our local Congressman (also a Republican) also made a big deal out of the "first responders" after a bus crash on the interstate.
