“If you play this game and you step into the arena, this stuff can happen,” Bennett told a news conference after his top-seeded Cavaliers lost to the 16-seed UMBC Retrievers. “And maybe those who haven’t been in the arena or in the competition, maybe they don’t understand that.”

A good headline and an even better acronym.

He’s more up on his Teddy than I thought!

He’s right too. As noted by someone earlier, it was probably more of a reaction to the entire Twitterverse than to sportswriters. But it’s ultimately a simple story — they played a horrendous game, all of them, at the worst time.

Geno destroys 16 seed St. Who the hell cares 140-52.
God, I wish someone would not only beat him, but destroy one of his teams by 60 or so one day.

As attacks on the media go, this one's about as tame as possible. I really think your ire is best directed elsewhere. But I'm not an objective observer.

"UConn (33-0) shot 65 percent from the floor, 73.6 percent in the first half, and outscored the No. 16 seed 96-10 in the paint.

There was more than one record set in the game.

UConn on Saturday also shattered Division I women's records for most points in a quarter (55) and half (94) of a game. The previous NCAA records were held by Central Michigan for a quarter (45 in 2015) and Long Beach State for a half (80 points in 1987)."

55 points in a quarter. 5.5 points per minute. Jaysus.

This is one of those things where it's evident early on what's going to happen. So milk the clock every possession, making ball control your single greatest objective. Just keep the score down, whatever the score is. You are a college tournament team, not Class 1A high schoolers. You can do that, can't you?

In some high school leagues, Geno would be suspended for running up the score.

I did love this from the Saint Francis coach:

    Loyola looks good.

    Why does DePaul suck now?

I will say I talked to Joey Meyer for a story a couple years ago and he was a great guy.

He must be a great coach. I can’t believe that the best 4 high school players each year are this much better than the next 20. It must be the great coaching.

OTOH, if it really is a tremendous talent disparity between the best team and the next 20, then women’s college basketball is just a sideshow and not a serious competitive sport.
