Something many people have absolutely no interest in.

This was a really interesting article. Thank you for posting.

The controversy surrounding cultural appropriation is something I've read a lot about. In Canada, there was a huge story about a writer/professor named Joseph Boyden, who has written several books and lectured about indigenous culture. He won the Giller Prize, a big honour, and is a member of The Order of Canada. (One of the books, The Orenda, is a personal favourite.)

Boyden told several different stories about his ancestry and got caught. What's clear is he loves indigenous culture and really thought he was making a positive impact. But his lies created a firestorm, which, to be fair, he hasn't handled well. Instead of eating his shit sandwich, he made even more excuses.

That led to a debate about how much say he -- or any other non-indigenous person -- should have. I see it as a compliment that a Boyden or an Azalea would want to be a success in a lifestyle that isn't "theirs." Suffice it to say there is severe pushback. Several Canadian media types who joked on Twitter about a "Cultural Appropriation Prize" paid a heavy price. One lost his job, another was demoted from a prestigious TV news position.

Her music video with Jennifer Lopez called "Booty" is, ahem, worth a look.

Who was the girl who called her a Becky? Nikki Minaj? That was pretty funny.

I don't understand being driven to fame at all, but if you are, and you get a taste of it, and then you're irrelevant again, it must be very hard.

    Really?

I was just a small-time columnist, and I was driven by it, at least in part. Going from having a voice, even to a limited audience, to working as an anonymous drone in an office and not even having an audience at home, living with a woman and two small children, that shit wasn't/isn't easy. It's why this place is so therapeutic.
