You really think these two things are analogous?

Yes. Getting the same result with less input is better. Preferring something only because it means somebody keeps a job is silly.

Pretty soon we'll have a society that doesn't interact. Which is not a society. o_O Great for shareholders, though!

Yes, those five words I exchange with the cashier are life fulfilling. This is fucking ridiculous.

The one thing about the online push that I absolutely hate is when I look online to see if a store carries something, and then I go to the store to buy it and they don’t actually carry it in stock.

Then, you realize any given store only physically carries about 1 percent of the items on their website.

It’s mostly with bigger items, like furniture. I don’t want to buy a fucking kitchen table over the internet, when the shipping basically doubles the cost of the thing and I still have to wait a few days to get it.

They are not the same. Your two examples are ridiculous and unrealistic. Using a cashier is a minimal nuisance and can potentially keep people employed, I'm ok with losing a minute or two each time I shop.

Is this anything like pleading for us to think of the waitresses?

I hope not. If it is I will rethink my position.

Every grocery store I go to with self-checkout has a an employee dedicated to helping clients with the machines, etc. It seems like it doesn't really cost a job.

How many registers is the person watching over?

If the criterion is to maintain jobs, my examples are perfect.
