There's a portion of the fan base that is wary of success because they really don't want Trotz back. Never mind that he's played four rookies more than 50 games and is in position to win the division again despite losing numerous key parts from the past two years and his top goalie has been off his feed for half the season. A number of people, including some inside the Caps apparently, want to see Todd Reirden (sp?) as head coach and don't want anything to mess with that.

One of the TV guys last week said it would be rich if the Caps actually did win it this year and Trotz said thanks for the Cup, see you. The GM who let Marcus Johanasson walk for almost nothing got an extension. The coach who has won with the team he was left got nothing.

I'll admit, I was souring on Barry in late February, right around the time they had those two totally unprofessional efforts in losses to Chicago and Columbus, games they didn't even show up for. But I like the way he's juggled things here at the end of the season, and he has the team playing well at the right time. Will it translate to playoff success? Who knows? Those who want to scrap this season just to get rid of Barry need to understand there are only so many shots that the Ovechkin-Backstrom duo will have down the stretch of their careers.

Those are like the best stories in sports. And this guy was from central casting!

Q: Did you get any advice before you went out?
A: I don't think I heard anything, other than, 'Put your helmet on.' and now I am standing here."

Q: Did you see Joel Quenneville just laughing as you were getting on the ice?
    A: I think I would have, too.

Emergency goalies are such a weird, great NHL ideosyncrasy. I always wonder why they don't just make some rostered fourth-line plug put on the gear. It's not like you do the equivalent in any other sport. NFL teams always know which one of their WR played QB in HS and can fill in for an emergency. MLB teams just use position players to pitch in a pinch. But NHL teams just find some guy at the local beer league who happens to have his gear.

I didn't know that they actually have an emergency goalie on call every game, rotating between a list of guys who usually sit in the press box. I was imagining a frantic rush to the rink after getting the call.

I believe they changed it with the new collective bargaining agreement last year to mandate that teams have an emergency goalie in the stands at all home games. That person can fill in for either team. I believe they get paid $500, if they actually have to suit up. Which is kind of nothing in the scheme of things, but then again I am sure any of those guys would do it for nothing.

Fantastic story. Shouldn't he stop being an emergency goalie now? Because you just can't top that.

In Feb. 1962 Toronto Marlboros goalie Dave Dryden (Ken's brother) was summoned from the stands at Maple Leaf Gardens to sub for Gump Worlsey who was with the Rangers at the time and injured early in a game against the Leafs. Dryden was 20 at the time and wouldn't get to the NHL again until 1965.

I was working at the NHL office last night and when Foster came in any eye that wasn't otherwise occupied monitoring one of the other games on at that time was watching the Hawks.

That is both interesting and disappointing that they keep the emergency goalie in the building for nights like this. I liked the idea of him frantically packing his gear bag and rushing to the United Center after getting the call. But it's still amazing.

Watching Quenville laughing was great. How hungover is he this morning?

I am not 100 percent positive, but I think the mandate about having an emergency in the building for every game came about because of the Florida Panthers game a few years ago when Roberto Luongo and his backup both were hurt, and Florida was without a goalie. They had to stop play and they were scrambled to get the goalie coach into gear before one of the hurt goalies got his gear back on and came out to play out the game.
