I think his internal polling is telling him he is falling woefully behind an uneducated ironworker and he doesn’t want to be the losing candidate in a district where he won with 65 percent two years ago.

 

He loves kids!

 

And he got his tax cut for the wealthy passed, so what else is there for him to accomplish?

He can run for president just as well as the former speaker as he can as the current speaker. Reagan and Nixon were both "unemployed" politicians when they won the presidency (as was Trump, for that matter).

 

He was always in it to destroy Medicare and Social Security, even more than the tax cut. I'm a little surprised he threw in the towel on that noble goal, but he must have seen that it was never going to happen.

 

I am with Quant on that. He'd get blown away and be lucky to get past New Hampshire. Don't forget polling has consistently shown Ryan about as unpopular as Pelosi. His image isn't going to improve when he takes that private sector sinecure for services rendered to the ultra-wealthy.

 

Chuckling ... and now Medicare and Social Security will destroy themselves!

 

I can't see a route to the Oval for Ryan, but I wouldn't be shocked if he's thinking getting out of DC for a few years before attempting a White House run isn't the best play right now. And, if nothing else, he can use a POTUS run to line his coffers ala Huckabee.

 

Maybe Ryan will be Pence's running mate when he's running for re-election in 2020. [/blue font]

Why not? He's young. Better than average speaker. And he did get the tax cuts through. Why wouldn't he be viable as republican nominee in 2024?

 

Because people hate him.
