Has Baseball Prospectus been proven spectacularly wrong about Matt Davidson? It said he was going to hit .215 with a .681 OPS. He currently sports a 1.115 OPS and hit three home runs on Opening Day.

By the way, the sharp criticism of "groupthink" is ironic on a thread where a dozen former sports writers have rallied around the opinion that 19 plate appearances are definitive.

I don't even think he went that far. That said, even accepting your description, it's weird that he now writes some mea culpa for an opinion that he never issued. He's playing to the crowd and to the story and, I imagine, the Twitterati has been merciless. The proper response would have been: Fuck off and take it up with the scouts.

Aren't you the one who is a stickler for words?
The other faux pas was the headline: “The verdict is in on Shohei Ohtani’s bat and it’s not good.” If I replace “verdict” with “early report,” it sounds plenty more reasonable. Still wrong, but at least more fair.

    I am.

Passan's opinion was that scouts had issued a "verdict." Now he says they more accurately issued an "early report." He never issued his own opinion on Ohtani.

So he does have an opinion.

He did not issue the opinion that he is apologizing for.
