Los Angeles isn't like New York. Wow, what riveting commentary.

The LAT staff is whining quite a bit over this.

A few weeks ago, the rumors of a move to Santa Monica were applauded because most of the staff lives on the Westside. Now this story comes out and the staff is pissed because, it says, most of the staff lives in East L.A. or Pasadena. I doubt most of the staff lives in East L.A. Sounds like typical newspaper people, find something to be pissed about.

Those who didn't like it just wanted to stay in DTLA, period. I am not pro or anti union, but the LAT union is not the be-all, end-all in the newspaper world. The new owner wants the paper to succeed and isn't a hedge fund that is only there to strip-mine the place (like Denver). There still will be owners who will make decisions they feel best benefit the paper.

Maybe the public can pitch in and check if Los Angeles is misspelled in a deck hed.

Everybody --- reporters, desk, management --- can pretty much work remotely now anyway. Physical location of your building just doesn't matter anymore.

And as fewer people populate the newsroom, more want to work outside the newsroom. It's a cycle. And a newspaper loses its identity. And from what I've seen, the local knowledge takes quite the hit when your reporters can reside 70 miles from that newsroom.

The only thing a newsroom is good for these days are those going away cake "celebrations."
