    Doesn’t matter, 18 RBI doesn’t tell me whether or not he’s having a good year or not.

    Sure it matters. Eighteen RBIs for Giancarlo Stanton on May 28 tells you he's having a bad two months. Eighteen RBIs on May 28 for Ronald Torreyes tells you he's having a pretty good year so far.

    Mikael Franco is batting .234 with 17 RBIs, which leads the 2nd-place Phillies.

    But you have to pull in a bunch of extrinsic knowledge to make that inference. .300/.400/.500 tells you someone is having a good year, no further thought necessary.

    How many ABs does Mr .300/.400/.500 have? I guess we need some extrinsic knowledge for those stats, too.

    Is it really "a bunch of extrinsic knowledge" to know that 18 RBIs for Giancarlo Stanton is not good? If Poin looks at the stats on May 28 and sees Stanton with 18 RBIs (or even 28), does he really have no idea that Stanton is having an off year?

    I wish they'd color-code these stats the way you can conditionally format figures in Excel, so old fucks like me know if something's shitty, average, above average, or Trout-like.

    Giancarlo the last 3 years April thru May 31:

    * 2015: 44 RBIs, .348 wOBA
    * 2016: 26 RBIs, .341 wOBA
    * 2017: 38 RBIs, .374 wOBA

    Looks like he had only 1 good April thru May the last 3 years, at least by Dick's standard of what's true and real.

    If a guy gets called up on May 1 and has 28 RBI by May 28, that's pretty good.

    That could be as few as 7 hits in a month. What if he grounds into double plays in every at bat except those?

    RBIs are a better indicator of how well a lineup is doing, not an individual player.

    Extreme hypotheticals.
