Who overvalues then? I haven’t heard “holds” references by anyone smart in ages.

It’s the “game winning RBI” of pitchers’ stats.

They are talked about quite a bit for fantasy baseball purposes because some leagues use that statistic, but I wouldn't look at them much for a real-world evaluation. Perhaps it tells you that the guy is getting a lot of work in high-leverage situations and getting the job done, but that's not enough. Look at the MLB leaders in holds from last year and you will find dominant non-closers like Andrew Miller and Archie Bradley mixed in with relatively anonymous guys like Taylor Rogers and Nick Vincent.

It's better than game-winning RBI because it does tell you something about how the pitcher was used, but not much better.

The Braves recently recalled Ronald Acuna, the top-ranked prospect in baseball.

He had a .304 slugging percentage in 78 plate appearances in AAA this year.

That just supports the idea that they started him in the minors for service time purposes and they knew he was ready right out of spring training.

I don't think he's ready to be a pitcher in the major leagues.
