Yeah, I'm willing to guess Wood was more dominant than Ol' Hickory Cadore when he hurled the pill in the gloamin' for the Brooklyn Robins.

Spahn and Marichal combined to strike out 12 of the 115 batters they faced. They allowed 22 baserunners.

Wood struck out 20 of 29, with two baserunners.

Seriously, getting a lot of pop-ups or grounders over 9 innings (or 12 or 16) isn't even close to striking out 20.

 

What gets me about that 26-inning game is that it lasted just 3 hours and 50 minutes.

It would have gone at least nine hours today; 12 if it was Yankees/Red Sox.

 

More dominating? Maybe. Better? Probably not.

Outs are outs. A five-pitch strikeout is no more valuable than an easy one-pitch groundout or popup, and much less efficient. What did that domination get him? Had Wood pitched like Spahn or Marichal that day, he probably wouldn't have flamed out so quickly.

 

He pitched better that day than those guys did their days.

 

A nine-inning shutout is better than a 16-inning shutout? To each his own, I guess.

Outs are outs, but the pitcher doesn't get them alone. A strikeout is (almost) all the pitcher. A ball in play is the defense and the pitcher splitting duty.
