    Well first off, I don’t think she was wrong. And I think cultural appropriation in this way is a sign of progress, not regress.

    It's true that human beings have been doing monstrous things to each other for a long time. It's also true that we're not living in the direct aftermath of Cyrus conquering the Lydians. If we were, and the Lydians had some simple requests about what's polite and what isn't, I'd say we should probably listen to them.

    If that means I'm not going to become a whiny douchebag by diving into a pit of self-loathing over something I had no control over and that has been going on throughout the entirety of human history, in every culture on every continent, ever since some Neanderthal bashed his neighbor's head in with a rock for a bigger piece of mammoth meat, then yes. Yes it is a defense.
