Having worked with Anne Vasquez, the "co-star" of that Tronc video, I can state unequivocally that she wouldn't have survived five seconds in the Billy Goat of Royko's era, before it became a tourist trap.

Are they going to run the one where he says the problem with Mexico is all the Mexicans? It would be appropriate given the times.

I thoroughly enjoyed the one he wrote towards the end of his career - and life - that was entirely in Ebonics.

Can you imagine? Royko in this era? He'd have gotten laid off and told everybody to bleep off on the way out the door. You think Fredrick hates the suits? Royko is the definition of anti-suit and is somebody the current execs would despise and want fired. Cause they don't care about the byline; they care about the internet views. Royko would mean too much money to the suits in New York.

Royko would be the last to get laid off, now or then. He sold more papers than anyone else, and it probably wasn't close.

Twitter would have eaten Royko alive. As much as he offended Frank Sinatra, could you imagine the offense he’d give to some glass-jawed celeb today?

Royko took jabs at conservatives and liberals. He would have been a cool kids pariah for the latter.

Are we talking established columnist Royko or brand new starting out columnist Royko? They'll never permit columnists to flourish again like Royko. The minute he stepped out onto a ledge - whether it be referring to the new owner as "the alien," pissing off Sinatra, or insulting an entire group of people - the suits would demand an apology and possibly suspend him, which I can't see sitting well.
