I always looked at a C as a bronze medal.
Who wouldn't be happy with a bronze?
I sure was. Especially since I would spend an average of about three minutes on homework for each class each semester.

At Michigan the median was a B+.

At Chicago, the median was a 177, because they used numbers, not letter grades.

I got a 171 (my worst grade) in legal ethics and a 182 (my best grade) in criminal procedure. Take from that what you will.

Me too! Had I, as an undergrad, exhibited this student's level of effort and interest in this course -- oh, wait, that's exactly what I did! -- and traipsed out of there with a B, my ass would have been buying the house a round!

I think 168 is passing. I think. Maybe 167. Maybe the highest, theoretically, was 185 or 186, but they would tell you that only one person every few years would get that. I think 182-184 was typically the best grade in the class.

Who the hell came up with that?

    I don't know.

It's a weird place, though. So this is just par for the course.

Divide 177 by 2 and you get 88.5 (which is a borderline B+). Spreading the scale out like that gives the grader a little more room to maneuver.

Now that I think about it, maybe it should have said "has scarcely changed an iota."

This one could be president. Where do we send the checks?
