We do see T'Challa without the suit in Civil War and it was glorious. But I know, not his standalone movie. His suit in his movie was definitely a step up from Civil War and I'm OK with it as it shows Shuri's genius at work.

Black Panther really was more of an ensemble movie than I expected. They recently released the Honest Trailers for it and that reminded me just how much Nakia does to save the day. Hell, if everybody had been listening to her all along and gotten Wakanda involved in the rest of the world sooner, the entire conflict might have been avoided. Shuri, Zuri, Okoye and M'baku all have moments, some of them multiple moments. That seems like a lot for a "solo" movie.

The ending of the trailer made me LOL.

Agree with this. I really enjoyed the book, but Ernest Cline (the author) helped make the movie screenplay simpler and it worked really well. The basic point of the book and movie (even though the world's depressing, it's the only reality we've got) came through.

The scenes showing/riffing on "The Shining" were hilarious ... and not mentioned at all in the book. I'm guessing Spielberg's a big fan of that movie and decided to have some fun with it

Just Deadpool 2. The movie is exactly what it looks like in the trailers yet - somewhat surprisingly - there are some twists and jokes that aren't spoiled.

I read somewhere that they put some misleading shots in the trailers to help preserve some of the surprises. I still think the first one was a little better, but not by much. The credits scenes are great.

40-Year-Old Virgin. In the scene where Carell watches a tape Paul Rudd lent him, lo and behold....Stormy Daniels is in the Star Wars parody.

Oh, I want that to be a real movie. Funniest trailer I've seen in a long time.

I got around to seeing "Hired Gun" on Netflix, the doc on the rock 'n' roll session players. I really liked it. Some good stories, some time for the musicians to each show their stuff, and got to learn a little bit on how the music biz works. Especially notable was the recurring bit about Billy Joel and his relationship with his backup band. Joel doesn't come off well at all in this.

It is a real movie. IMDB has it coming out on Aug. 17.

Rented “Black Panther” last night, and was a little underwhelmed. It was good. It checked a lot of boxes for me, especially with Killmonger as the rarest of characters: an interesting Marvel movie villain.

But nothing cooked beyond a simmer in the second half, and a lot of time was reserved for fight/battle scenes that weren’t compelling. It seemed rushed to completion. A good movie that missed its chance to rise above the Marvel CGI slugfest.

    Specific quips below:

Killmonger quickly became complacent and one-note.

It raised social issues as a plot device, then kept them confined to vague generalities beyond the “He’s just a boy” scene at the beginning.

T’Challa learns a lesson and changes the policy of his country because ... he had one insightful conversation and he got his butt kicked.

Nakia, Okoye and Shuri are good supporting characters but they each stay in their lanes, driving the plot forward in workmanlike fashion.

And W’Kabi ... wow ... I get that sometimes a good actor like Daniel Kaluuya is wasted in a role, but W’Kabi wasted the ink they used to write that thin character. He should have just been named Plot Device 1.
