Sportswriters- more national than local - will make damn sure it doesn’t go away. The % of them whining about on social media is notable. Sports media might be more liberal than political media.

It is amazing that kneeling during the anthem hasn't made racists not be racists, isn't it.

I’ll go you one better. I think getting bent out of shape about whether someone kneels or doesn’t kneel is unpatriotic.

Let me posit this: what about moments of silence? Is it too much to expect people to actually be reflective snd respectful and quiet during that time? That’s how I think about the national anthem. You don’t have to stand there and think about the troops. You can just stand there and think about the hot chicks in the stands or about why you’re not starting on the first team. But make a show of it, be respectful. Or you can choose to be disrespectful (in the opinions of me and many others) and reap the consequences.

My parents are both buried in Arlington National cemetery and my father’s burial flag is in a glass case on my wall, so I will always choose to stand and think of the service that he and others have made to this country. If you wanna sit to make some half baked point that produces nada, zilch, in the way of change, well, I just think you’re a fool.

I think most of the posters on SJ.com are good people.

Is someone who cheers people losing their jobs, including members of SJ.com, a good person?

    Pretty much this.

It’s kind of funny, the “fuck your feelings” movement kind of masceraded as a fuck feelings movement. The real point was fuck YOUR feelings. Mine carry a lot of weight.

(Granted, it’s a response to demands for respect of feelings that often stung other folks’ feelings. A forceful demand for some kind of change that left a lot of butthurt everywhere)

I’m certainly admiring of the sacrifices your parents made, and personally I’d always try to do all I could to avoid being perceived as disrespectful.

    That said ...

During some pretty dark times in this here republic, we were able to give people space to conform (or not conform) to the ritual as their consciences permitted. I think the best way to show gratitude for your parents’ sacrifice is to always keep in mind what they sacrificed for.

So someone should make sure to respect your life experience and background?

Seems like good advice all the way round.

(I like the idea that doing nothing is “making a show of it.” Out of curiosity, is the military paying someone to turn this respectful moment into marketing disrespectful to those who sacrificed?)

So you’re the guy who talks during the moment of silence?

I do too. That said: it’s a business.

I think Starbucks closing down for employer-mandated sensitivity training - based on one idiot in Philly - is pretty strange, but Starbucks is protecting its business. Same with the NFL. I like the NFL and will not be boycotting it over this.
