Oh, I don't believe that, as it would certainly devalue it.

It's the idea of being offended by displays of patriotism that I'm confused by.

Your first sentence makes clear that patriotism can be "devalued." Presumably by coercion, or by mindless repetition, or by insincerity or by cynicism - as in the use of "patriotism" as a for-profit sales tool.

So you've answered your own second sentence.

People can be offended by displays of fake patriotism.

Let's remember that the networks haven't bothered to show the anthem for most games.

Holy s***. They actually sang Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles? I wish I had been there for that!

If it's a virtue to stand for the U.S. anthem, is a Heil Hitler salute pro forma in that circumstance?

Right? I always get serious anthem envy from the Olympics.

I didn’t say it was. But some do, especially when he starts rolling out the pig socks and the Castro garb.

Can you bring an assault weapon to an NFL game?

There are 50,000 people in this world who apparently think the NFL is run by Congress.

How could they? Their camera people and producers are too busy standing and respecting the flag. Do not do so would imply this is just being used as part of an entertainment product, Perhaps cynically.

To clarify my earlier remarks, the NFL is a private business and is fully within its rights to do this.

However, it is a de facto order from the president of the United States.

Of course it’s not actionable under the First Amendment, but that really doesn’t make it any less concerning. We all don’t live in Smallpotatoes’ world where we’re only allowed to be upset at things that are illegal.
