Well, they were disrespecting the soldiers, you see.

Well, this was inevitable. Surprised it took us so long to get there.

Had a conversation with a friend last night, who made a good point.

The NFL tolerates wife beaters, rapists, dog killers, drunk drivers, cokeheads, frat boy bullies, etc., but draws a hard line at civil disobedience.

If it was America The Beautiful played instead of the national anthem, would anyone kneel?

And not wearing conforming socks! Not talking about Kaep's pig socks, but equipment violations.

You don't see something totalitarian in this anthem stuff?

    A couple questions:

Did the suspension of that soccer team come from the German government or a private employer?

Were its players given the option of staying in the locker room rather than participate in the salute?

Based on what I'm confident are the answers those questions, NO, I don't think that means we're on the same totalitarian path as Nazi Germany. This is a distinctly different thing than that. But at least we got the obligatory Hitler comparison out of the way.

I'm not saying it's the same. But Trump, the current president, said that athletes who don't come out and stand for the anthem don't belong in the country. That strikes me as totalitarian.

And while we're answering questions with questions: Do you think the NFL, a private employer, applies these rules if Trump and Pence—the executive branch of the US government—don't make it an issue?

Probably not. But not because of allegiance to Trump and Pence, but instead because of how a sizable portion of its customer base has been riled up about it, largely due to Trump and Pence. It ain't because the League supports Trump, but rather because it hopes he, and everyone else, will finally shut up about it.
