What did I do wrong here?

Fine, but you asked what you were doing wrong, and in my analysis, it's your assumption that other drivers know the reasons for the peculiarities you display -- a slow progression through a left-hand turn, driving slowly while you look for something, and - to me, this is the kicker - stopping to let another car in from a side street. There's courtesy, and then there's disrupting the flow of traffic.
I suspect more than one driver behind you has asked themselves, "What is this person doing?" That's usually when they honk the horn, as a bit of a wakeup call.
You sound like an unpredictable driver, which can be frustrating to others.

A cop wouldn't stop me for any of those things.

Heh. A cop stopped me a couple of months ago for DWHC (driving a white Honda Civic).

Seems there was a robbery at a grocery store about 4 miles down the street a few minutes before, and the bad guy was driving a white Honda Civic.

Might be illegal...stopping with the right of way could be construed as impeding traffic.

What's selfish about letting another car out?

People who give up the right of way are such a danger. I was in the car with my sister and she slowed down almost to a stop because she was afraid non-existent traffic that had to yield might not. Driving like that is not safe when people are expecting you to follow the right of way.

Safe driving requires that people adhere to convention and not take it upon themselves to decide when and how they want to be 'courteous.'
An attempt to be 'courteous' to another single vehicle can result in being 'discourteous' to multiple other vehicles.
Driving conventions exist as a means to provide some baseline for predictability of driver behavior.
The more any given driver decides to stray from convention in an effort to realize his/her own understanding of 'courtesy,' the more 'discourteous' he/she actually becomes in practice.

OK, so I'm at a rotary and as the law requires, yielding to cars in the rotary. The cars behind me honk. Is there some common-sense exception to the law of which I'm not aware?

If you are constantly being honked at in multiple and various traffic scenarios, perhaps the other drivers are not the problem.
