    This notion that we need a banana republic president to randomly throw up roadblocks on commerce, to (as he sees it) promote the sales and profits of American businesses is right out of the dark ages. It's bad for our country, and I don't understand why more people don't intuitively understand it.

    We all benefit when our markets are left free enough to promote competition, which enhances the goods available and the well-being of consumers. People should stop worrying about how they can centrally manage our economy. But to the extent they think about that. ... Our economy benefits when consumers benefit. Not when businesses are protected. That is survival of the potentially unfit.

    To the extent Americans buy German cars, presumably it's because those German car companies do a good job of producing a car that people like at a competitive price. That's a good thing.

    There is no question that international competition in the automobile industry has drastically improved the design and construction of all automobiles -- including American cars - in the last 10-15 years. On our recent trip to visit our daughter in France, we had a rental Citroen SUV, and it was a good car.
