But Obama ... what about Obama ... but Obama ... what about Obama ... but Obama ... what about Obama.

It's not, "but Obama ... what about Obama ... but Obama ... what about Obama ... but Obama ... what about Obama."

It's that I keep getting told that Trump is doing things that are unprecedented. He's breaking conventional norms!

But, it turns out that isn't true. It's just that the outrage machine gets worked up over everything Trump does, and didn't even notice that Obama, or other previous presidents did the same thing -- whether it's imposing tariffs, "locking up immigrant children like dogs". or previewing the next days unemployment numbers.

Other than the facts that: 1) He likely wouldn't have had the BLS numbers when he made that speech (typically the staff at the White House finds out the night before), and 2) We were smack dab in the middle of a nasty recession that was worsening by the day (as people were losing jobs in droves), so that everyone already KNEW that the jobs numbers were going to be getting worse for months, if not years. ... and 3) The Federal Reserve had already taken their overnight rate to 0 and market participants had zero expectation that that was going to be changing in the months (and likely years) ahead, and they were knee deep in QE1 and were accelerating it at the time, unlike today when there is uncertainty about the timing of what they are going to be doing next (and that is when the jobs numbers matter to markets).

    . ... it's completely analogous.

What Obama said was the equivalent of me predicting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. What Trump did with that tweet was signal about an ACTUAL unknown. ... and as is usually the case with him, his own self aggrandizement was the motivation.

@YankeeFan, can you explain to those of us on here who think the racist traitor in chief is mentally unstable at best, and a certifiable moron at worst...why this direct quote from him (linked from above) does not prove our point?

    Which that article makes clear.

The larger point is that it is another instance of the media misrepresenting reality (whether on purpose or out of ignorance and/or laziness). That it keeps happening allows for the belief in fake news to take hold.

It’s a pattern that should concern serious journalists.

Another part of this is the source. If Podunk State U rather than Harvard is the author of the study, it doesn't get nearly as much play.

Reminder: Trump blamed the victims and tried to claim credit for mitigating the death toll.

The media can’t keep using Trump as an excuse, though. He’ll be gone at some point, but his absence won’t make the media’s eroding credibility magically return.
